On September 8-11, 2011 the European Culture Congress was held in Wroclaw. It was one of the most important events of the Polish presidency in the European Union. Prof. Ryszard Markiewicz attended the discussion panel called “Wikianarchia”. The topic of this panel was inter alia the resolution of conflict between authors and recipients of culture by way of modifying the copyright law.

Once again On September 8, 2011, a new edition of the workshop “Distribution Agreements” was held in Warsaw. The workshop, organized by Business Media Solutions, grouped representatives of various businesses. Jarosław Sroczyński presented a lecture entitled “Development of Online Distribution: New Opportunities Stemming from the EU Regulation on Vertical Restraints”.

Our lawyer, Mr. Lukasz Wieczorek, won a 2nd prize in competition for the best MA thesis in the field of commercial law, defended in academic year 2009/2010. The nationwide competition is organized annually by the publishing house Wolters Kluwer Polska sp. z o.o. and “Przegląd Prawa Handlowego” legal magazine. Mr. Wieczorek’s MA thesis was “The civil liability in groups of companies”.

On June 3, 2011, our lawyer Lukasz Wieczorek presented a lecture on “The problem of criminalizing the prohibited agreements restricting competition (cartels) in antimonopoly law in comparative perspective” at the Conference “Goodbye Gordon Gekko? – White-collar crimes”. The Conference took place at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University.

On May 10, 2011 on website iwiesz24.pl an interview with Dr Sybilla stanisławska-Kloc was published. In the interview Dr Sybilla Stanisławska-Kloc inter alia reffered to the problem of copyright law boundaries. She also raised the isssue of permissible use of protected works and uploading files to online services. Additionally, Dr Sybilla Stanisławska-Kloc commented on recent plans of Press Law revision. On April 14, 2011, Jarosław Sroczyński participated in the nomination ceremony of the 2011 Ranking of Law Firms, taking place in the offices of „Rzeczpospolita” in Warsaw. J. Sroczyński received a „Leading Lawyer” recommendation in the field of competition and antimonopoly law. Our law firm, Markiewicz & Sroczyński GP, was named first among the “recommended law firms” in the field of competition and antimonopoly law.

On January 18, 2011 the Minister of Culture and National Heritage appointed Prof. Ryszard Markiewicz as the Chairman of the Copyright Commission. Prof. Ryszard Markiewicz, who holds the position of Director of the Institute of Intellectual Property Law at the Jagiellonian University, is a well known specialist in the field of copyright, information and industrial property law, a member of the International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property, a member of the Legal Commission of the Polish Academy of Learning and a lawyer in our law firm. Prof. Markiewicz was appointed as arbitrator on 21 December 2010.
