Jarosław Sroczyński speaks at the „40th Annual Conference on International Antitrust Law and Policy”, Fordham Competition Law Institute, New York

On September 26-27, 2013 an anniversary conference was held at the Fordham University in New York – “40th Annual Conference on International Antitrust Law and Policy”. This is one of the most important international conferences devoted to global and national issues of competition law, organized annually by the Fordham Competition Law Institute, headed by Professor Barry Hawk. Mr. Sroczyński received an invitation to attend this conference as a speaker, presenting comments related to the current issues of abuse of market dominance. The presentation was made during a discussion panel entitled „Future of Unilateral Conduct Enforcement and Policy”. The panel was presided by Professor William Kovacic, former head of the Federal Trade Commission. Dr. Małgorzata Krasnodębska-Tomkiel, President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, Professor Eleanor Fox of the New York University School of Law, and Mr. Eduardo Perez Motta, former head of the Mexican competition authority and Chairman of the International Competition Network (ICN), also participated in this panel. In his conference paper entitled „Dominance, Collectivism and Behaviorism: New Perspectives?”, Mr. Sroczyński concentrated on multi-farious analysis of the collective dominant market position. Presentations and papers of the participants were published in a conference binder and by Spring 2014 they will appear as a book publication.
The conference gathered numerous representatives of competition authorities from throughout the world. Presentations were made inter alia by Mr. Joaquín Almunia, Vicepresident of the European Commission and Competition Commissioner, Mr. Alexander Italianer, head of DG COMP, Mr. Andreas Mundt, head of the Bundekartellamt, Mr. William J. Baer, head of the US Department of Justice Antitrust Division and Ms. Edith Ramirez, head of the US Federal Trade Commission. Panels were also attended by judges of the Court of Justice of the European Union, the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal, competition courts from Brasil and the Republic of South Africa, as well as by representatives of the doctrine of law, university professors, and practitioners from leading law firms and economic consultancies.

TV comment by Jarosław Sroczyński in TVN CNBC Live

On September 10, 2013 Jarosław Sroczyński was invited to participate in TVN CNBC Live program as an expert in the field of consumer law. J. Sroczyński described the rights of consumers in a situation when the airline changes the place of departure after the ticket has been bought by the passenger. In his legal comments, J. Jarosław Sroczyński and Łukasz Wieczorek contribute to “The Dominance and Monopolies Review 2013”

In July 2013 “The Dominance and Monopolies Review” was published, edited by Mr. Maurits Dolmans from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP. The book covers a review of the legal regulations on the abuse of dominant position in chosen jurisdictions from all over the world. The chapter on Poland was prepared by Jarosław Sroczyński and Łukasz Wieczorek. The authors have reviewed the most important facts on market dominance in Poland and discussed the possible forms of abuse of dominance with a broad reference to the Polish antimonopoly case-law. Furthermore, they described the private enforcement of competition law and commented on the perspectives and future developments of case-law on the abuse of dominant position in Poland. The publication was issued by the publishing house Law Business Research Ltd. in London.

Article in the Polish Patent Office Quarterly on the Anniversaries of Professors Janusz Barta and Ryszard Markiewicz

In issue 2/2013 of the Polish Patent Office Quarterly, an article was published devoted to the celebration of the 65th anniversary of birth and 40th anniversary of the research work of Professors Janusz Barta and Ryszard Markiewicz. Workshop „Consumer law in the light of recent developments and existing problems”

On May 27-28, 2013 a workshop „Consumer law in the light of recent developments and existing problems” was held in Warsaw, organized by MM Conferences. Piotr Suski presented a lecture entitled “Withdrawal from the contract – recent developments and existing problem”. The presentation was discussing court judgments and OCCP decisions related to the consumer right to withdraw from a contract concluded away from business premises or at a distance, as well as developments arising in this area from implementation of directive 2011/83/eu. In his presentation, Piotr Suski focused on the consumer right to withdraw contained in the energy supply contracts, telecommunication services contracts as well as the contracts for the supply of digital content.

XVII International Energy Conference EUROPOWER attended by our lawyers

Lawyers from our Law Office, Piotr Suski and Łukasz Wieczorek, participated in the XVII International Energy Conference EUROPOWER, held in Warsaw on May 22-23, 2013. Our lawyers received special VIP invitations from the organizer, MM Conferences. The EUROPOWER Conference was held under the patronage of the President of Energy Regulatory Office and the Minister of Economy. The Conference has become a platform for annual meetings of key representatives of energy and petrol sectors in Poland, including energy companies, central public offices, parliamentarians, energy scientists, etc. The subject of the Conference was, inter alia, the competition development in the national gas and petrol markets, electricity price formation, smart metering and future perspectives of competition in the heating and cogeneration markets.
