On April 11-12, 2014 a Plenary Assembly of the Conference of Rectors of the Polish Academic Schools has taken place in the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. Among guests attending this event, including the Prime Minister Donald Tusk and representatives of science and culture, was Prof. Ryszard Markiewicz. During the session on science issues, he delivered the lecture entitled ”Intellectual property law in the context of ”affranchisement” of scientists and the open science”.

The second edition of “Merger Control”, a joint publication of the European Lawyer, co-edited by prof. Jean-François Bellis and Porter Elliott, was published in March 2014. Jaroslaw Sroczynski is the author of a chapter on merger control issues in Poland. On March 14, 2014 MM Conferences organized in Warsaw a workshop entitled “New Act on Consumer Rights – new obligations for entrepreneurs”. At the workshop Piotr Suski presented a lecture on “Increased obligations and responsibilities for the entrepreneur according to a new consumer directive”. It was devoted to an analysis of obligations imposed on entrepreneurs by the new bill on consumer rights, which implements provisions of Directive 2011/83/EU. Particular attention was paid to the specific consumer disclosure requirements.

On March 13, 2014 during a ceremony in Warsaw, Marcin Mioduszewski was honored with a statuette “Noble Heart of Legal Counsel”, awarded by the National Council for Legal Advisers.
Marcin Mioduszewski for over five years has been providing pro bono legal assistance to the WIOSNA Association. His professionalism and dedication, as the initiator and Chief Legal Officer, contributes to the development of pro bono work for the people in need.

On February 19, 2014 Jarosław Sroczyński and Piotr Suski conducted in Warsaw a special workshop for real property developers. The workshop was organized in connection with the publication by the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection of its third report, concerning practices applied by developers which violate consumer laws. Our lawyers discussed numerous examples of violations, including prohibited clauses applied in developers’ contracts concluded with consumers. Moreover, the participants were trained how to protect their companies from financial sanctions applied by the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection and how to react in the event of falling under the OCCP’s scrutiny.

On February 3, 2014 Piotr Suski presented a lecture on “Contractual penalty in energy sale contracts” for participants of the workshop entitled Expert of practical enforcement of the Energy Law, organized in Warsaw by MM Conferences. The lecture was devoted to the problems arising from application of contractual penalty in energy sale contracts on the grounds of civil law (especially regulations concerning consumers) and competition law. It took into account also decisions of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection as well as the Court of Competition and Consumer Protection related to demanding of contractual penalties from contractors.
