On May 27-28, 2013 a workshop „Consumer law in the light of recent developments and existing problems” was held in Warsaw, organized by MM Conferences. Piotr Suski presented a lecture entitled “Withdrawal from the contract – recent developments and existing problem”. The presentation was discussing court judgments and OCCP decisions related to the consumer right to withdraw from a contract concluded away from business premises or at a distance, as well as developments arising in this area from implementation of directive 2011/83/eu. In his presentation, Piotr Suski focused on the consumer right to withdraw contained in the energy supply contracts, telecommunication services contracts as well as the contracts for the supply of digital content.

Lawyers from our Law Office, Piotr Suski and Łukasz Wieczorek, participated in the XVII International Energy Conference EUROPOWER, held in Warsaw on May 22-23, 2013. Our lawyers received special VIP invitations from the organizer, MM Conferences. The EUROPOWER Conference was held under the patronage of the President of Energy Regulatory Office and the Minister of Economy. The Conference has become a platform for annual meetings of key representatives of energy and petrol sectors in Poland, including energy companies, central public offices, parliamentarians, energy scientists, etc. The subject of the Conference was, inter alia, the competition development in the national gas and petrol markets, electricity price formation, smart metering and future perspectives of competition in the heating and cogeneration markets.

89On May 23, 2013 the Centre of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies (CARS) of the University of Warsaw published a new edition of the on-line periodical „The Internet Antimonopoly and Regulatory Quartely” (iKAR 2(2)/2013). The current edition is entirely devoted to the problems of so-called slot allowances, charged by network sellers from their suppliers. This special number of iKAR is a follow-up of the conference organized by CARS on March 19, 2013 in Warsaw, entitled: ”Charging slot allowances in Poland. The need to change or to interpret the law?”.

On May 17, 2013 at the Jagiellonian University a special ceremony has taken place in the Aula of Collegium Novum. The Anniversary Book dedicated to Professors Janusz Barta and Ryszard Markiewicz, commemorating their common research achievements, was granted to the Professors. The ceremony coincided with the Jubilee of the 65th anniversary of birth and 40th anniversary of the scientific work of both Professors. Over 200 participants attended the ceremony, inter alia, the representatives of the scientific community, governmental institutions, businesses, media sector and law offices. The Jagiellonian University was represented by its authorities, the Rector prof. dr hab. Wojciech Nowak and the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration prof. dr hab. Krystyna Chojnicka. Family members, friends and colleagues working with the Professors, including from the Chair of Intellectual Property Law (former Institute of Intellectual Property Law), all have gathered at this unusual event.
Among the honorable guests attending the ceremony was General Director of the Ministry of Culture and Natural Heritage Jacek Olbrycht, President of the Polish Patent Office dr Alicja Adamczak, President of the Polish Television dr Juliusz Braun, Vice President of Cracow Elżbieta Koterba, prof. dr jur. Dres. jur. h.c. Joseph Straus and prof. dr Andreas Wiebe.
”Disputes over intellectual property” – the Anniversary Book contains 73 articles which focus on the analyses of copyright law, economics and intellectual property laws. The book was edited by prof. Andrzej Matlak and dr Sybilla Stanisławska-Kloc.
The Anniversary Book includes articles authored by four lawyers from Markiewicz & Sroczyński GP: ”The statutory license to make use of the work for the purpose of public security or for the administrative, judicial or legislative purpose and reports from such proceedings” by Michał Markiewicz, ”Behavioral antitrust – a modern method of cartel analysis” by Jarosław Sroczyński, ”Plagiarism versus autoplagiarism” by dr Sybilla Stanisławska-Kloc, and ”Problems in determining the duration of the license agreement” by dr Karolina Włodarska-Dziurzyńska.
During the ceremony Professors received many congratulations, words of recognition and awards, i.e., the Silver Medal ”The Merit for Culture Gloria Artis” awarded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage Bogdan Zdrojewski and the”Honoris Gratia” distinction awarded by the President of Cracow prof. Jacek Majchrowski.
Following the Anniversary Book award ceremony, the international scientific conference was held. Participants made presentations on various subjects such as the violation of copyrights and modern aspects of patent law and trademark protection. In two panels the lectures were delivered by prof. dr hab. Monika Czajkowska-Dąbrowska, prof. dr hab. Marian Kępiński, prof. dr hab. Aurelia Nowicka, prof. dr hab. Ewa Nowińska, prof. dr hab. Ryszard Skubisz, prof. dr hab. d. h. c. Stanisław Sołtysiński, prof. dr jur. Dres. jur. h.c. Joseph Straus, prof. dr hab. Janusz Szwaja, prof. dr hab. Elżbieta Traple and prof. dr Andreas Wiebe. One of these two panels was chaired by both Professors.

Konf_UP_RPOn April 26, 2013 the Polish Patent Office, in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization and the Warsaw University of Technology, organized a conference entitled „How to use and not violate. How to protect and not restrict”. The conference took place in the seat of the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science of the Warsaw University of Technology, and was attended by over 400 participants, consisting of academicians, entrepreneurs, patent attorneys and members of organizations of artists. During the conference Prof. Ryszard Markiewicz delivered a lecture on major issues of copyright in the Internet. On April 23, 2013 the International Bar Association hosted a conference in Warsaw. The conference was organized in connection with this year’s meeting of the International Competition Network in Poland. The conference was devoted to the new challenges and enforcement tools in competition law. Jarosław Sroczyński delivered a presentation entitled “Sanctions for individuals: one step forward, two steps backward?”. He commented on the project of amendments to the Polish competition law which implements administrative sanctions for persons who manage the undertakings.
